Why Printed Colours Can Look Less Bright

If your printed design looks less vibrant than expected, the usual reason is the difference between screen colours and print colours.

Screens use RGB, which combines red, green, and blue light and can produce very bright, saturated colours. Printers use CMYK inks, which have a smaller colour range and cannot reproduce every RGB tone.

Bright neons, rich blues, and intense reds are especially difficult to match in CMYK.

To get closer to the result you want:

  • create or convert your file in CMYK before finalising it
  • use proof colours in your design software if available
  • check the exported PDF after conversion
  • keep print colour limits in mind while designing, not just at export time

Thinking about print output early usually leads to a better result and fewer compromises later.
