When you save artwork for print, make sure all fonts are suitable for high-resolution output. Choose vector-based fonts, such as OpenType or TrueType, so they remain sharp at any size.

Always check licensing to confirm your fonts can be embedded in print-ready files. Export tools sometimes warn you about licensing issues, but not always. If you do not have a commercial licence for a font, you may need to buy one.

Avoid web-optimised or low-resolution fonts, as they may appear pixelated in print.

Preparing Fonts for Print

  • embed fonts in the design file, ideally in a print-ready PDF
  • if needed, convert text to outlines, but save an editable version first
  • proofread everything before outlining, because outlined text cannot be edited later
  • make sure your colour settings match the intended print method, such as CMYK or spot colours

Embedding fonts helps prevent font substitution during print production, which is where missing fonts are replaced with something else.
